Hearing officers conduct probable cause hearings in emergency departments or facilities designated by each county to provide intensive treatment for patients involuntarily detained due to being a danger to others, a danger to themselves, or gravely disabled as a result of a mental health disorder or impairment by chronic alcoholism. Hearing officers may also conduct capacity hearings pursuant to Welfare and Institutions Code §§5332-5334. Hearing officer applicants must be active members in good standing with the California State Bar.
